SF Legend Clarke Has "Rendezvous With Rama"
Arthur C. Clarke, the greatest speculative fiction (sci-fi for the rest of you) author ever, had his 
“Rendezvous With Rama” yesterday as he passed through the monolith and into the Great Beyond.
At press time, Dr. Clark’s estate could not be reached to confirm his last words were: “My God! It’s full of stars!”
Okay, I made that last bit up. The rest is true, however.
Author, inventor (of the geostationary communications satellite), and futurist, he was most famous for his novel “2001: A Space Odyssey.”
But it was another book of his that opened up my teenaged mind and showed me that I be scientifically-minded and still keep my sense of wonder about the answers to the Big Questions.
Appropriately enough, that transformative book was “Childhood’s End.”
Favorite movie was the sequel to “2001″ — “2010 – The Year We Make Contact,” which also contains my all-time favorite movie moment . . .
Here, Dr. Heywood Floyd after 10 years of trying to get closure about what 
happened to the astronauts he sent on the 2001 mission, is visited by one of them, David Bowman. But this is a substantially changed Bowman whose physical appearance jumps back and forth along his timeline as he speaks with Floyd.
Bowman has come to warn away the 2010 mission . . .
Dave Bowman: “You see, something’s going to happen. You must leave.”
Dr. Floyd: “What? What’s going to happen?”
Dave Bowman (w/transcendent joy): “Something wonderful.”
Dr. Floyd: “What?”
Dave Bowman: “I understand how you feel. You see, it’s all very clear to me now. The whole thing. It’s wonderful. ”
